Word learning in two languages: Neural overlap and representational differences
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigated the neural basis of newly learned words in Spanish as a mother tongue (L1) and English second language (L2). Participants acquired new names for real but unfamiliar concepts both languages over course two days. On day 3, they completed semantic categorization task during fMRI scanning. The results revealed largely overlapping brain regions English. However, showed heightened BOLD response within prefrontal cortex (PFC), due to increased competition existing lexical representations. In contrast, displayed higher activity than primary auditory cortex, which suggests phonological processing more irregular phonological-orthographic mappings. Overall, these suggest that novel are similarly L1 L2, represented regions. differ terms cognitive control processes.

Sound Symbolism and Early Word Learning in Two Languages
Verb learning seems especially difficult for children learning many languages, at least relative to nouns. Many have speculated because this is because verbs refer to relational events that are components of much more complex events. Consider a buying-selling event. If the child hears the verb “buy”, does it mean sell, get, handover, give money, or perhaps smile? By this view, a key problem in ...
متن کاملRepresentational Distance Learning for Deep Neural Networks
Deep neural networks (DNNs) provide useful models of visual representational transformations. We present a method that enables a DNN (student) to learn from the internal representational spaces of a reference model (teacher), which could be another DNN or, in the future, a biological brain. Representational spaces of the student and the teacher are characterized by representational distance mat...
متن کاملCross-Representational Interactions: Interface and Overlap Mechanisms
A crucial question facing cognitive science concerns the nature of conceptual representations as well as the constraints on the interactions between them. One specific question we address in this paper is what makes cross-representational interplay possible? We offer two distinct theoretical scenarios: according to the first scenario, co-activated knowledge representations interact with the hel...

Learning Word Vectors for 157 Languages
Distributed word representations, or word vectors, have recently been applied to many tasks in natural language processing, leading to state-of-the-art performance. A key ingredient to the successful application of these representations is to train them on very large corpora, and use these pre-trained models in downstream tasks. In this paper, we describe how we trained such high quality word r...
