Wood-decay type and fungal guild dominance across a North American log transplant experiment

چکیده

We incubated 196 large-diameter aspen (Populus tremuloides), birch (Betula papyrifera), and pine (Pinus taeda) logs on the FACE Wood Decomposition Experiment encompassing eight climatically-distinct forest sites in United States. sampled dead wood from these after 2 to 6 y of decomposition determined rot type as a continuous variable using lignin loss/density loss ratio (L/D) assessed wood-rotting fungal guilds high-throughput amplicon sequencing (HTAS) ITS-2 marker. found L/D values line with white dominance all three tree species, having lower than birch. Based HTAS data, fungi were most abundant diverse guild, soft more brown low values. For logs, decay was related density at sampling. associated balance between brown/soft abundance OTU richness. Our results demonstrate that is governed by biotic abiotic factors, which vary species.

Distribution and drivers of ectomycorrhizal fungal communities across the North American Arctic

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) form symbioses with a few plant species that comprise a large fraction of the arctic vegetation. Despite their importance, the identity, abundance and distribution of EMF in the Arctic, as well as the key drivers controlling their community composition are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the diversity and structure of EMF communities across a biocli...

Density-dependent diversification in North American wood warblers.

Evidence from both molecular phylogenies and the fossil record suggests that rates of species diversification often decline through time during evolutionary radiations. One proposed explanation for this pattern is ecological opportunity, whereby an initial abundance of resources and lack of potential competitors facilitate rapid diversification. This model predicts density-dependent declines in...

Latitudinal variation in parasitoid guild composition and parasitism rates of North American hawthorn infesting Rhagoletis.

Rhagoletis pomonella (Diptera: Tephritidae) populations in North America have diverged by exploiting host plants with varying fruiting phenologies in environments that differ markedly in temperature and humidity. As a result, four genetically and ecologically distinct R. pomonella populations that display partial reproductive isolation have evolved. Host shifting by Rhagoletis and similar evolu...

Hepatitis E Virus Infection Among Solid Organ Transplant Recipients at a North American Transplant Center

Background.  Autochthonous hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection has been reported in over 200 solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients since 2006, yet little is known about the burden of HEV among SOT recipients in North America. We performed a retrospective, cross-sectional study to investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with HEV infection among SOT recipients at our institution. M...
