چکیده
Wind–wave characterization and modeling around a group of islands can have significant challenges due to strong diffraction, shoaling, reflection. In this work, the wind–wave climate Azores archipelago (North Atlantic Ocean) is characterized based on wave buoy measurements recorded between 2012 2021 at five different locations with water depth ranging from 80 110 m. Moreover, during four storms extratropical origin two tropical are analyzed in detail. Due identified island shadow effects, average height (Hs) ranged 1.50 m (S. Miguel island) 1.86 (Graciosa south north archipelago, respectively. Under storm conditions, effects lead differences up approximately 7 Hs archipelago. The ability simulate local conditions by an unstructured WAVEWATCH III model covering high resolution Archipelago analyzed. addition, performance scalability High Performance Computing environments considering numerical schemes parallelization algorithms.

Landslides density map of S. Miguel Island, Azores archipelago
The Azores archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean and is composed of nine volcanic islands. S. Miguel, the largest one, is formed by three active, E-W trending, trachytic central volcanoes with caldera (Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas). Chains of basaltic cinder cones link those major volcanic structures. An inactive trachytic central volcano (Povoação) and an old basaltic volcanic complex ...
متن کاملNitrates in Groundwater Discharges from the Azores Archipelago: Occurrence and Fluxes to Coastal Waters
Groundwater discharge is an important vector of chemical fluxes to the ocean environment, and as the concentration of nutrients is often higher in discharging groundwater, the deterioration of water quality in the receiving environment can be the result. The main objective of the present paper is to estimate the total NO3 flux to coastal water bodies due to groundwater discharge in the volcanic...
متن کاملCryptotermes brevis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in the Azores: Lessons After 2 yr of Monitoring in the Archipelago
The dispersal flights of West Indian drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) were surveyed in the major cities of Azores. The sampling device used to estimate termite density consisted of a yellow adhesive trap (size 45 by 24 cm), placed with an artificial or natural light source in a dark attic environment. In addition, data from two other projects were used to...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Corrosive Action of Mineral Waters from Thermal Sources: A Case Study at Azores Archipelago, Portugal
Waters from natural sources of the São Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago have been investigated regarding their corrosive action on metallic materials. The corrosive and encrusting characteristics of the waters have been established in terms of relevant chemical parameters (namely pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and concentrations of bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, chlori...
متن کاملImplementation of the Water Framework Directive in an Outermost EU Region: The Case of Azores Archipelago
The Azores Water Plan (AWP) came to force in year 2003 in order to provide a coherent set of measures to protect and enhance water resources in the archipelago. The AWP was developed according to EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and a close relationship can be found between goals on both documents. The evaluation of results associated to AWP implementation, made possible through a consultatio...
