Wind wave footprint of tropical cyclones from satellite data

چکیده

Tropical cyclones are associated with extreme winds, waves, and storm surge, being among most destructive natural phenomena. Developing capability for a rapid impact estimate is crucial coastal applications risk preparedness. When predicting waves characteristics to tropical cyclones, the traditional approach involves two-step procedure (a) Holland-type wind vortex model (b) numerical simulations using wave generation model, buoy satellite measurements validation. In this work, we take advantage of increasing amount remote sensing observational data propose new empirical footprint cyclones. For purpose, construct dataset over million observations triggered by assuming circular shape TC influence area defining composites significant height as function representative parameters track like minimum pressure, its forward velocity, latitude. The validation against confirms usefulness first estimation footprint, although an underestimation events observed due relatively small number recorded. Due efficiency, can be applied estimations footprints in operational systems, reconstruction historical or synthetic assessments.

QuikSCAT wind retrievals for tropical cyclones

The use of QuikSCAT data for wind retrievals of tropical cyclones is described. The evidence of QuikSCAT 0 dependence on wind direction for 30-m/s wind speeds is presented. The QuikSCAT 0 show a peak-to-peak wind direction modulation of 1 dB at 35-m/s wind speed, and the amplitude of modulation decreases with increasing wind speed. The decreasing directional sensitivity to wind speed agrees wel...

A Non-MLE Approach for Satellite Scatterometer Wind Vector Retrievals in Tropical Cyclones

Satellite microwave scatterometers are the principal source of global synoptic-scale ocean vector wind (OVW) measurements for a number of scientific and operational oceanic wind applications. However, for extreme wind events such as tropical cyclones, their performance is significantly degraded. This paper presents a novel OVW retrieval algorithm for tropical cyclones which improves the accurac...

Improving Wind and Rain Simulations for Tropical Cyclones with the Assimilation of Doppler Radar Data

More accurate prediction of the strong winds and heavy rain associated with tropical cyclones using numerical weather prediction (NWP) models would be helpful in the provision of weather services for the public. In this paper, the impact of assimilating radar data in the simulation of Typhoon Neoguri and Severe Tropical Storm Kammuri in 2008 is studied using Weather Research and Forecasting (WR...

P-Wave Microseism Source Areas: Tracking Tropical Cyclones

8 Nonlinear wave-wave interactions generate double-frequency (DF) microseisms, 9 which include both surface waves (mainly Rayleigh-type) and compressional (P) waves. 10 Although it is unclear whether DF surface waves generated in deep oceans are observed 11 on land, we show that DF P waves generated under Super Typhoon Ioke far offshore are 12 detected by beamforming of land-based seismic array...

Tropical Cyclones Features Inferred from Sar Images

Due to relatively small amount of in situ data available for the open oceans, particularly during extreme events, remote sensing techniques take an important role in the retrieval of geophysical information under such conditions. This study is based on a dataset of wide swath Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images (400 km x 400 km coverage), acquired by the European ENVISAT satellite, to observe...
