Wind farm control for wake-loss compensation, thrust balancing and load-limiting of turbines

As renewable energy sources such as wind farms become dominant, new challenges emerge for operating and controlling them. Traditionally, farm control aims to dispatch power set-points individual turbines maximize extraction and, thus, their usage assets. Yet, grid balance frequency support are fundamental in presence of high penetration volatility prices demand. This requires a paradigm change, moving from maximization revenue maximization. In this paper, three active strategies pushing shift investigated, namely: wake-loss compensation, thrust balancing, load-limiting control. The findings large eddy simulations reference show that compensation indeed improves the generation on waked farms, but at price increased structural loads certain turbines. addition balancing can equalize stresses wear long term, while still attaining required output level. Furthermore, controllers could potentially aid by allowing maintenance be scheduled single time window, thus reducing operation costs.
