Wildlife responses to livestock guard dogs and domestic sheep on open range

چکیده
Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are an attractant to carnivores; however, often accompanied by humans and livestock guardian dogs (LGDs; Canis familiaris), which defend from depredation. Sheep also compete directly with wildlife for grazing resources. Although practiced millennia in much of the world outside North America, effect that transhumance has on is poorly understood. To test bands (sheep, humans, LGDs) wildlife, we modeled detection probability wild mammals relative presence Northwestern United States. band was associated a reduction about half likelihood detecting large carnivores (Ursus americanus, Ursus arctos, lupus, Puma concolor, p < 0.05) deer (Odocoileus spp., 0.01), both while present after it left area. Contrastingly, coyotes (Canis latrans) were more than three times as likely be detected when (p 0.001), twice 0.01). Coyotes only species present. It unclear how long these effects persist moved through area, but our results suggest temporarily displaces many mammals, mesopredator release coyotes. This study suggests there tradeoff between conservation benefits provided LGDs protecting costs displacement some mammals.

Diseases of Wildlife and Their Relationship to Domestic Livestock
MOST OF THE STUDIES of diseases of wildlife have been carried on primarily in relation to human welfare and the transmissibility of these diseases to domestic livestock rather than for the benefit of wildlife itself. Today the emphasis is changing somewhat, and wildlife diseases are being studied as a necessary part of conservation. Despite the views of many older writers, losses among wild spe...

To the Editor: Domestic dogs live in close association with humans and livestock, participating in the transmission of diseases of zoonotic, veterinary, and conservation interest (1,2). Most households in Uganda have traditionally kept dogs for hunting and for help with herding, security, and guarding livestock. Most dogs receive no prophylactic measures (e.g., vaccinations) and roam freely; th...
متن کاملRelation of Black-tailed Prairie Dogs and Control Programs to Vegetation, Livestock, and Wildlife
Black-tailed prairie dogs, Cynomys ludovicianus (Ord), have been considered to be pests on shortgrass and mixedgrass prairies of central North America since the late 1800's (Merriam 1902). Because prairie dogs compete for forage with livestock, massive prairie dog control programs were initiated and are still a common practice (Schenbeck 1982). Prairie dog control also has been justified to red...
متن کاملIs Wildlife Going to the Dogs? Impacts of Feral and Free-Roaming Dogs on Wildlife Populations
In human-populated landscapes, dogs (Canis familiaris) are often the most abundant terrestrial carnivore. However, dogs can significantly disrupt or modify intact ecosystems well beyond the areas occupied by people. Few studies have directly quantified the environmental or economic effects of free-roaming and feral dogs. Here, we review wildlife-dog interactions and provide a case study that fo...

Mammals made up 69% of the items, birds 24%, amphibians 4%, reptiles 1%, fish <1%, invertebrates 1% and unidentified items 1%. A minimum of 44 species of wild bird, ...
