Wicked problems: university research topic convergence despite divergence in local educational and innovation policies

Purpose This study aims to determine how sustainable development (SD) demands (according the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) SD themes from 2005) are connected contents of education, research, and innovation (RDI) in higher education institutions (HEI). Education RDI nexus may affect HEI’s capability handle SD-related wicked problems enhance their societal impact. Design/methodology/approach paper examined SD-oriented curricula two universities (Brazil Finland) counted number research outcomes. In addition, conceptual modelling was used analyse mechanisms that be directing HEIs’ work local innovation. Findings The data showed a convergence deviation subjects between HEIs. There no correlation RDI-work either HEI. processes have different UNECE at focal point, education-research is lacking. difference indicates new knowledge produced through not effectively education. Modelling revealed outcomes arose same kind business, industry challenges, implementing effective stakeholder pressures into results indicate needs were directly transferred competence qualification curriculum. Originality/value To best authors’ knowledge, this first quantitative reveal independence universities’ on educational curricula.
