Why Do Lower Educated People Separate More Often? Life Strains and the Gradient in Union Dissolution

Abstract In many Western countries, coresidential unions of lower educated people are less stable than those higher people. A prominent explanation this gradient in union dissolution holds that the experience more strain. Evidence for has been limited by a focus on only economic dimension strain and one partner each union. study, we broadened concept to cover multiple life domains capture both partners To do so, used longitudinal data from Household, Income Labour Dynamics Australia survey (N = 52,574 union-years; 7,930 unions). Generalized structural equation models showed individuals experienced not domain but also other domains. Moreover, tended have who as well. total, joint strains explained 49% education dissolution. These results suggest pivotal stratification family life.
