Why implicit attitudes are (probably) not beliefs

Should we understand implicit attitudes on the model of belief? I argue that implicit attitudes are (probably) members of a different psychological kind altogether, because they seem to be insensitive to the logical form of an agent’s thoughts and perceptions. A state is sensitive to logical form only if it is sensitive to the logical constituents of the content of other states (e.g., operators...

Why Maps Are Not Propositional ∗

Why Maps Are Not Propositional∗ A number of philosophers and logicians have argued for the conclusion that maps are logically tractable modes of representation by analyzing them in propositional terms. But in doing so, they have often left what they mean by ‘propositional’ undefined or unjustified. I argue that propositions are characterized by a structure that is digital, universal, asymmetric...

Coherent beliefs are not always types

For two interacting agents, we construct a space of nature states S and a coherent Ž . hierarchy of beliefs s-additive probability measures of one agent about S, about S and the beliefs of the other agent about S, and so on—a hierarchy that has no s-additive coherent extension over S and the hierarchies of the other agent. Thus, this hierarchy of beliefs w cannot be the description of the belie...
