Whole Elliptical Surface Polishing Using a Doughnut-Shaped MCF Polishing Tool with Variable Tilt Angle

Elliptical elements are essential optical surfaces for modifying systems. For polishing the whole elliptical surface using doughnut-shaped MCF tool with variable tilt angle, an experimental investigation was conducted in this work. Firstly, a flat workpiece polished to determine feasibility. It found that middle portion of had optimal ability remove materials, and roughness Sa at material removal peak changed from 134 nm 17.5 within 50 min polishing. A smoother could be obtained MCF2 slurry MCF3 slurry, but use MCF1 resulted rough surface. Then, effects working gap h, revolution speed time on results were tested study characteristics. 9.6 glossiness 278 Gu obtained, form error improved 2.3 μm 1.3 μm.
