The differentiation of human and physical geography is a fundamental distinction in Geography. This commentary examines the past, present, possible future places within Geography, focusing on situation United States. Physical played major role establishment Geography as an academic discipline, but became marginalized soon thereafter. For past 80 years, States has largely been social science that uneasily accommodated natural-science component it. Although somewhat healthy during latter part 20th century, appears to be decline.
