Whiteness, Religious Diversity and Relational Belonging

OPEN ACCESS CC BY-NC-ND-PAID African communities in Australia reflect the rich cultural and religious diversity of continent. Despite their persistence agency, many members from these continue to experience a ‘fractured belonging’ due persistent issues racism exclusion; that have been exacerbated during COVID-19 pandemic. Religious community groups organizations long played important roles assisting new migrants with settlement belonging Australia, including migrants. This article presents preliminary findings an Australian Research Council project on social cohesion, drawing census data interviews African-Australian leaders Melbourne Hobart, Mauritian, Ghanaian, Ethiopian, Somalian South Sudanese communities. It explores religion spirituality play both addressing perpetuating racism, trauma displacement. also examines development ‘relational diverse, complex dynamic identities among contemporary Australia. argues case for retelling history migration subvert myth white Christian nation excludes non-white Australians. centres migrants’ lived narratives theories developed by scholars counter narrow negative stereotypes perpetuated political media discourses.
