White Dwarf Subsystems in Core-Collapsed Globular Clusters

چکیده
Numerical and observational evidence suggests that massive white dwarfs dominate the innermost regions of core-collapsed globular clusters by both number total mass. Using NGC 6397 as a test case, we constrain features dwarf populations in clusters, at present day throughout their lifetimes. The dynamics these subsystems have astrophysical implications. We demonstrate collapse cluster cores is ultimately halted dynamical burning binaries. predict local universe yield merger rate $\mathcal{O}(10\rm{)\,Gpc}^{-3}\,\rm{yr}^{-1}$, roughly $0.1-1\%$ observed Type Ia supernova rate. show prior to merger, inspiraling binaries will be observable gravitational wave sources milli- decihertz frequencies. Constraining white-dwarf kicks in globular clusters
The wind of an asymptotic-giant-branch stars is sufficiently strong that if it is slightly asymmetric, it can propel the star outside of the open cluster of its birth or significantly alter its trajectory through a globular cluster; therefore, if these stellar winds are asymmetric, one would expect a deficit of white dwarfs of all ages in open clusters and for young white dwarfs to be less radi...
متن کاملHelium-Core White Dwarfs in Globular Clusters
We examine the theoretical implications of a population of low-mass heliumcore white dwarfs in globular clusters. In particular, we focus on the observed population in the core of NGC 6397, where several low-mass white dwarf canditates have been identified as “non-flickerers” by Cool and collaborators. Age and mass estimates from cooling models, combined with dynamical and evolutionary consider...
متن کاملConstraining white - dwarf kicks in globular clusters : III . Cluster Heating
Recent observations of white dwarfs in globular clusters indicate that these stars may get a velocity kick during their time as giants. This velocity kick could originate naturally if the mass loss while on the asymptotic giant branch is slightly asymmetric. The kicks may be large enough to dramatically change the radial distribution of young white dwarfs, giving them larger energies than other...
متن کاملGlobular Clusters in Dwarf Galaxies
Recent work on globular cluster systems in dwarf galaxies outside the Local Group is reviewed. Recent large imaging surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope and follow-up spectroscopy with 8-m class telescopes now allow us to compare the properties of massive star clusters in a wide range of galaxy types and environments. This body of work provides important constraints for theories of galaxy an...
متن کاملGlobular Clusters in Dwarf Galaxies
Data are presently available on the luminosities and half-light radii of 101 globular clusters associated with lowluminosity parent galaxies. The luminosity distribution of globulars embedded in dwarf galaxies havingMv > −16 is found to differ dramatically from that for globular clusters surrounding giant host galaxies with Mv < −16. The luminosity distribution of globular clusters in giant gal...
