Where you sit is where you stand: education-based descriptive representation and perceptions of democratic quality

چکیده
Scholars of descriptive representation have paid growing attention to the issue class. This article contributes this line research by examining educational (mis)match elected officials and citizens they serve. Using data from an original paired elite-mass survey experiment, it investigates whether judgements democratic quality are affected education-based representation. The study reveals limited evidence in support idea that politicians value sociotropic terms. Instead, provides strong affinity effects where judgments influenced representation, or lack thereof, favours based on their own background. An important exception though without higher education, whose assessments unaffected ends with a discussion implications these findings for existing future research.

Where You Sit is Where You Stand: The Impact of Seating Proximity on Legislative Cue-Taking∗
This article builds on Matthews and Stimson’s (1975) study of legislative cuetaking, analyzing the extent to which legislators sitting next to each other influence each others’ voting behavior. Data come from three decades of roll call votes in the California Assembly, a chamber in which each member is paired with a deskmate. By comparing deskmate pairs with nondeskmate pairs, I find that legis...
متن کاملWhere you stand depends on where you sit: qualitative inquiry into notions of fire adaptation
Wildfire and the threat it poses to society represents an example of the complex, dynamic relationship between social and ecological systems. Increasingly, wildfire adaptation is posited as a pathway to shift the approach to fire from a suppression paradigm that seeks to control fire to a paradigm that focuses on “living with” and “adapting to” wildfire. In this study, we seek insights into wha...
متن کاملValue Added and Its Uses: Where You Stand Depends on Where You Sit
In this policy brief we argue that there is little debate about the statistical properties of value-added model (VAM) estimates of teacher performance, yet, despite this, there is little consensus about what the evidence about VAMs implies for their practical utility as part of high-stakes performance evaluation systems. A review of the evidence base that underlies the debate over VAM measures,...
متن کاملEven if I showed you where you looked, remembering where you just looked is hard
People know surprisingly little about their own visual behavior, which can be problematic when learning or executing complex visual tasks such as search of medical images. We investigated whether providing observers with online information about their eye position during search would help them recall their own fixations immediately afterwards. Seventeen observers searched for various objects in...
متن کاملWhere should you sit to watch a movie?
A picture viewed from its center of projection (CoP) generates the same retinal image as the original scene. When a picture is viewed from other locations, the retinal image specifies a different layout and shapes, but we normally do not notice the changes. The mechanism underlying this is unknown. We studied the perceived shapes of pictured ovoids and planes while varying viewing angle and the...
