Where to find questing Ixodes frontalis ticks? Under bamboo bushes!

چکیده
Tick-borne diseases have a complex epidemiology that depends on different ecological communities, associating several species of vertebrate hosts, vectors and pathogens. While most studies in Europe are focused Ixodes ricinus, other may also be involved the transmission or maintenance This is case frontalis, poorly known associated with bird such as blackbirds, thrushes robins, wide distribution covering European countries. In previous study, high densities questing I. frontalis larvae were found during autumn-winter at site close to Nantes (western France) where long-term survey ricinus was conducted. These mostly observed under bamboo bushes. present we investigated presence bushes various locations. With aim mind, systematic search for undertaken by flagging method public urban parks private gardens presenting (32 sites). carried out maximize probability finding abundant stage, i.e. larvae. We searched first area (10 sites), then regions France (21 sites) one northern Italy. A single visit each revealed 29 32 sites: always present, nymphs frequent (59 % positive while adults only 14 sites. Questing stages this understudied thus easy find, dragging autumn winter. make assumption offers favourable place birds roost overnight outside their breeding period (i.e. spring), sheltered from both predators wind. would explain higher bamboo, relative biotopes. As harbour zoonotic pathogens, consequences discovery tick-borne discussed.

Infections and coinfections of questing Ixodes ricinus ticks by emerging zoonotic pathogens in Western Switzerland.
In Europe, Ixodes ricinus is the vector of many pathogens of medical and veterinary relevance, among them Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis virus, which have been the subject of numerous investigations. Less is known about the occurrence of emerging tick-borne pathogens like Rickettsia spp., Babesia spp., "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis," and Anaplasma phagocytophi...
متن کاملPrevalence and seasonality of tick-borne pathogens in questing Ixodes ricinus ticks from Luxembourg.
In Europe, ixodid ticks are important arthropod vectors of human and animal pathogens, but comprehensive studies of the prevalence of all relevant pathogens in Central Europe are scarce. As a result of ecological changes, the incidences of tick-borne infections are expected to increase. In this study, 1,394 nymphal and adult Ixodes ricinus ticks sampled monthly during the active season from 33 ...
متن کاملThe prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in questing Ixodes ricinus ticks in SW Poland.
Ticks constitute important vectors of human and animal pathogens. Besides the Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis, other pathogens such as Babesia spp., Rickettsia spp., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, are of increasing public health interest. In Poland, as in other European countries, Ixodes ricinus, the most prevalent tick species responsible for the majority of tick bites in humans, ...
متن کاملDifferential diagnosis of three common Ixodes spp. ticks infesting songbirds of Western Europe: Ixodes arboricola, I. frontalis and I. ricinus.
The three most common Ixodes spp. ticks found on songbirds in Western Europe are Ixodes frontalis, I. arboricola and I. ricinus. As the latter species is a generalist, it shares several avian hosts with the two strictly ornithophilic species. Infestations of the three species can overlap in time and space, implying that tick-borne pathogens maintained by the ornithophilic ticks and their hosts ...
