Where is Conflict Research? Western Bias in the Literature on Armed Violence

Abstract Which countries are likely to be subjects of research in the study armed conflict? Evidence from other fields suggests that often focuses disproportionately on West, but it is unclear what extent this true conflict studies. We suggest a baseline explanation focus each country’s experience, and we present two additional hypotheses: Western bias feasibility. Empirically, count abstracts five prominent or security journals, 1990–2015. also manually single-country case countries, measured by U.N. voting geographic location, appear more than non-Western even after considering conflict, wealth, factors. There less support for feasibility argument, official languages democracy. find French- Spanish-language literature. conclude with discussion under-studied offer related suggestions.
