When the Past Lives in the Present. Agrarian Landscapes and Historical Social Dynamics in the Southern Andes (Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, Argentina)

This article examines the agrarian landscape in one part of southern Andes (Quebrada Humahuaca, Jujuy, Argentina). The region possesses extensive and well-preserved archaeological remains agricultural systems, which stretch back to pre-Hispanic times. In this study, we employ an interdisciplinary approach our analysis components that structure landscape, especially those historical processes intervened its formation. creation a cartographic base, built from remote sensing fieldwork data, allowed for identification four principal each correspond distinct phases or periods mark region’s history. Our study shows that, contrast what is observed many other rural areas, successive productive dynamics developed area did not result destruction previous structures. Rather, presents multi-temporal agglutinating combination composition, transcends discontinuities matrix. owing partial reutilisation structures period; however, religious cultural factors play important role. studied only passive human activity, but also force influencing lifestyle decisions peasant populations live there today. research amplifies understanding landscapes how past temporalities are articulated with present through dialectical process.
