When bigger isn’t better—Implications of large high?severity wildfire patches for avian diversity and community composition

چکیده
Aim Wildfires increasingly create large high-severity patches with interior areas far from less disturbed habitats. We evaluated how these trends impact bird communities by investigating the effect of internal distance lower-severity areas, patch size, and years since fire on avian alpha beta diversity. Location Sierra Nevada, California, USA. Methods Bird occurrence data were collected during 2009–2017 within 27 wildfires representing 1–30 disturbance. A two-step multispecies occupancy method was used to account for imperfect detection 94 species estimate effects characteristics community richness dissimilarity. Results Community decreased edge size. Richness increased fire, but this pattern dependent higher peak (23 species) near edges than interiors (18 species). dissimilarity not associated distance, indicating that contain subsets of, rather complements to, communities. Dissimilarity peaked later increasing Guild tree primary cavity nesters negatively ground shrub insensitive while nester somewhat Due declines among other species, made up a greater percentage patches. Main conclusions As activity increases due accumulating forest fuels accelerating climate change, their resulting early-seral habitats are becoming more extensive area. Such changes likely decrease diversity locally shift composition away forest-associated species. Management actions promote full range limit size may best conserve fire-adapted ecosystems.

When competition does not matter: grassland diversity and community composition.
We examined whether the intense root competition in a rough fescue grassland plant community in central Alberta, Canada, was important in structuring plant species diversity or community composition. We measured competition intensity across gradients of species richness, evenness, and community composition, using pairs of naturally occurring plants of 12 species. One plant in each pair was isol...
متن کاملDiptera Community Composition and Succession Following Habitat Disturbance by Wildfire
Introduction Both biogeographic (for example, latitude) and local (for example, soil) processes determine composition and succession of biotic communities. Postfire succession of vegetation has been studied intensively in chaparral and coastal sage scrub. Fewer studies have examined postfire succession of animals, even though fires can drastically alter their abundance and diversity (Ahlgren an...
متن کاملCommunity composition and diversity of zooplankton in the northwest Persian Gulf
Survey on zooplankton composition was studied during June 2015 to March 2016, by selecting six stations along the coastal waters of Bushehr (the Northwest Persian Gulf). Twenty four zooplankton taxa were identified, and the different zooplankton groups represented twenty-one families. Copepoda was recorded with the most abundance (53.30 %) followed by Malacostraca (32.87 %), which in turn was f...

متن کاملEnvironmental factors affecting the composition and diversity of the avian community in igune, a traditional agricultural landscape in northern Japan
Background: “Igune,” a traditional agricultural landscape in the Tohoku region of Japan, is characterized by small-scale artificial woodlots surrounding a farmer’s house that are interspersed with paddy fields. During the rapid economic growth of Japan over recent decades, some igune woodlots have been abandoned or logged. Biodiversity conservation is an important issue worldwide, and tradition...
