What’s behind increasing wage inequality? Explaining the Italian case using RIF-OLS

Abstract This paper aims to identify how and what extent the Italian labour market structure, in terms of job composition institutional changes, shaped dynamics wages wage inequality decade between 2007 2017. We investigate main determinants behind rise Italy by using Recentered Influence Function (RIF) regressions. econometric approach allows—on one hand—to directly assess effects on unconditional distribution “beyond mean” statistics, like Gini coefficient. On other, it decomposes into endowment effects, following standard Oaxaca-Blinder technique. observe that working structures changes—contractual arrangements (permanent vs temporary contracts) hours (full-time part-time)—are factors explaining deterioration at bottom income scale, consequent increase inequality.
