What is Suksdorf’s hawthorn? Revision of the Western North American 20-stamen black-fruited hawthorns (Crataegus series Douglasianae, Rosaceae subtribe Malinae)

چکیده

An agamic complex of 20- and 10-stamen, black-fruited hawthorns (Crataegus subg. Sanguineae, sect. Douglasianae) occurs in western North America, with a 10-stamen taxon disjunct the upper Great Lakes basin. Here, we recircumscribe 20-stamen taxa at core this (C. ser. Douglasianae). This is needed order to distinguish between presumptively ancestral diploid its allo- autopolyploid derivatives, all differing breeding system, distribution, morphology, pattern genetic variation. The earliest name for these taxa, Crataegus gaylussacia A. Heller, was given distinctive plants Marin Sonoma counties California that have recently been shown be autotriploids. In Flora however, applied 20-stamen, hawthorns. We C. gaylussacia, also typify slightly younger name, suksdorfii (Sarg.) Kruschke, specimen from southern Washington diminished pollen fertility found allopolyploid, apomictic occurring east Cascades, northern north southernmost Alaska. Finally, recognize diploid, self-incompatible, sexual west Cascades southwestern as rhodamae-loveae sp. nov. Together predominantly tetraploid, apomictic, self-fertile douglasii Lindl. segregates (discussed detail companion paper), species are linked by whole genome duplications associated most cases hybridization, members red-fruited Americanae, each other. suggest provides model understanding other such groups related resulting fertilization unreduced gametes (facilitated but not necessarily dependent on occurrence gametophytic apomixis), often together hybridization. note an earlier effort DNA barcoding hawthorn provided limited support our taxonomic decisions here demonstrated some utility original plant loci like Crataegus. advocate will warrant consideration when revised light data those employed here.

Reticulate evolution in North American black-fruited hawthorns (Crataegus section Douglasia; Rosaceae): evidence from nuclear ITS2 and plastid sequences.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The taxonomic complexity of Crataegus (hawthorn; Rosaceae, Maleae), especially in North America, has been attributed by some to hybridization in combination with gametophytic apomixis and polyploidization, whereas others have considered the roles of hybridization and apomixis to be minimal. Study of the chemical composition and therapeutic value of hawthorn extracts requires...

Evidence for genetic association between East Asian and western North American Crataegus L. (Rosaceae) and rapid divergence of the eastern North American lineages based on multiple DNA sequences.

Phylogeographic relationships were constructed for 72 Old and New World Crataegus species using combinations of four chloroplast and up to five nuclear regions. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian results yield consistent relationships among major lineages. The close associations of the East Asian and western North American species point toward ancient trans-Beringian migrations...

Population genetic structure of diploid sexual and polyploid apomictic hawthorns (Crataegus; Rosaceae) in the Pacific Northwest.

Polyploidy and gametophytic apomixis are two important and associated processes in plants. Many hawthorn species are polyploids and can reproduce both sexually and apomictically. However, the population genetic structure of these species is poorly understood. Crataegus douglasii is represented exclusively by self-compatible tetraploid pseudogamous apomicts across North America, whereas Crataegu...

Abundance of Apple Maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella, Across Different Areas in Central Washington, with Special Reference to Black-Fruited Hawthorns

The apple maggot fly, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), infests non-commercial apple (Malus domestica (Borkh.) Borkh.) and native black-fruited hawthorns (mostly Crataegus douglasii Lindl.) in central Washington, but little has been published on the abundance of the fly in this region. In this paper, the abundance of R. pomonella across different sites near apple-growing area...

Hawthorn (crataegus Monogyna) Populations in Mid-canterbury

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a naturalised tree that is classified as a noxious plant in several counties in the eastern South Island. It is locally abundant in lowland forest remnants, and with the indigenous spiny shrub matagouri (Discaria toumatou), on grazing land in Canterbury. Two scrub sites near Porters Pass, where the original hawthorn trees still existed, and a forest site near Ko...
