“What Does It Take to Succeed Here?”: The Belief That Success Requires Brilliance Is an Obstacle to Diversity

Why are some fields and occupations more diverse than others? In this review, we describe a conceptual framework—the field-specific ability beliefs (FAB) model—that provides promising answer to question. This model proposes that gender racial/ethnic imbalances in field or occupation result part from the confluence of two beliefs: (a) belief success context requires high levels intellectual (“brilliance”) (b) cultural stereotype associates with (White) men other groups. We FAB detail evidence for it, including at its core present even among children. conclude by highlighting open questions.
