What can whiskers tell us about mammalian evolution, behaviour, and ecology?

چکیده

Most mammals have whiskers; however, nearly everything we know about whiskers derives from just a handful of species, including laboratory rats Rattus norvegicus and mice Mus musculus, as well some species pinniped marsupial. We explore the extent to which knowledge whisker system applies generally. This will help us understand evolution function, in order gain more insights into mammalian behaviour ecology. review is structured around Tinbergen’s four questions, since this method an established, comprehensive, logical approach studying behaviour. ask: how do work, develop, evolve? And what are they for? While all slender, curved, tapered, keratinised hairs that transmit vibrotactile information, show there marked differences between with respect arrangement, numbers, length, musculature, development, growth cycles. The conservation form common muscle architecture suggests early had whiskers. Whiskers may been functional even therapsids. However, certain extant equipped especially long sensitive whiskers, particular nocturnal, arboreal aquatic live complex environments hunt moving prey. Knowledge use can guide developing protocols designing enriched enclosures for captive mammals. suggest further comparative studies, embracing wider variety required before one make large-scale predictions relating function More research needed develop robust techniques enhance welfare

What can whole genome expression data tell us about the ecology and evolution of personality?

Consistent individual differences in behaviour, aka personality, pose several evolutionary questions. For example, it is difficult to explain within-individual consistency in behaviour because behavioural plasticity is often advantageous. In addition, selection erodes heritable behavioural variation that is related to fitness, therefore we wish to know the mechanisms that can maintain between-i...

What Vowels Can Tell Us about the Evolution of Music

Whether music and language evolved independently of each other or whether both evolved from a common precursor remains a hotly debated topic. We here emphasize the role of vowels in the language-music relationship, arguing for a shared heritage of music and speech. Vowels play a decisive role in generating the sound or sonority of syllables, the main vehicles for transporting prosodic informati...

What Evolution Can Tell Us about Protein-dna Inter- Actions

1. { Introduction Protein-DNA interactions are central for regulation of gene expression in the cell. Much progress has been made since the rst DNA-binding protein has been isolated 1]. The highest resolution picture of protein-DNA interactions is coming from more than 200 X-ray and NMR solved structures of protein DNA-complexes 2]. As this information was accumulated, structures have been thor...

What can proteomics tell us about platelets?

More than 130 years ago, it was recognized that platelets are key mediators of hemostasis. Nowadays, it is established that platelets participate in additional physiological processes and contribute to the genesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Recent data indicate that the platelet proteome, defined as the complete set of expressed proteins, comprises >5000 proteins and is highly ...
