Wet streaks in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Implications for Recurring Slope Lineae on Mars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL) are dark streaks that seasonally propagate and fade on Martian slopes. The morphology dynamics of RSL suggest they might be brine flows; however, more recent hypotheses propose dry, granular flows. To determine if consistent with flows, we investigated Mars analog wet in Wright Valley Antarctica using new chemical analyses soils waters, time-lapse photography, satellite images. Results show the source water to is primarily local snowmelt, which percolates downslope. Meltwater leaches hygroscopic CaCl2-rich salts from underlying Ferrar dolerite bedrock. These accumulate at soil surfaces via evapoconcentration deliquesce/effloresce response daily relative humidity changes, causing surface brightness fluctuate. Over several years, active CaCl2 salt component back into subsurface leaving a residue less surface. Applied Mars, inconsistent expression RSL. Wet over multiple drain onto low angled slopes, have characteristic pattern downhill lateral edges. In contrast, seasonal features, terminate angle-of-repose typically appear monochromatic. inconsistencies provide evidence against flow formation.

Accelerated thermokarst formation in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
Thermokarst is a land surface lowered and disrupted by melting ground ice. Thermokarst is a major driver of landscape change in the Arctic, but has been considered to be a minor process in Antarctica. Here, we use ground-based and airborne LiDAR coupled with timelapse imaging and meteorological data to show that 1) thermokarst formation has accelerated in Garwood Valley, Antarctica; 2) the rate...
متن کاملNew Constraints on the Locations, Timing and Conditions for Recurring Slope Lineae Activity on Mars
Introduction: Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL) [12] are dark flows found at many locations throughout low and middle latitudes on Mars. Distinctive properties of RSL include slow incremental growth, formation on warm slopes in warm seasons, and annual fading and recurrence. These properties strongly suggest that RSL formation is controlled by a volatile and are consistent with flows of water or bri...

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Slope steaks are one of the most intriguing modern phenomena observed on Mars. They have been mostly interpreted as some specific type of granular flow. We propose another mechanism for slope streak formation on Mars. It involves natural seasonal formation of a modest amount of highly concentrated chloride brines within a seasonal thermal skin, and runaway ...
متن کاملInfluence of soil properties on archaeal diversity and distribution in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica.
Archaea are the least understood members of the microbial community in Antarctic mineral soils. Although their occurrence in Antarctic coastal soils has been previously documented, little is known about their distribution in soils across the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Victoria Land. In this study, terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (t-RFLP) analysis and 454 pyrosequencing were coupled ...
