Western United States and Canada perspective: are herbicide-resistant crops the solution to herbicide-resistant weeds?

چکیده
Abstract Herbicide-resistant (HR) crops are widely grown throughout the United States and Canada. These crop-trait technologies can enhance weed management therefore be an important component of integrated (IWM) programs. Concomitantly, evolution HR populations has become ubiquitous in agricultural areas where grown. Nevertheless, crop cultivars with new or combined (stacked) traits continue to developed commercialized. This review, based on a symposium held at Western Society Weed Science annual meeting 2021, examines impact U.S. Great Plains, Pacific Northwest, Canadian Prairies over past 25 yr their future contributions IWM. We also provide industry perspective development role resistance management. Expanded options for both major minor expected. With proper stewardship, reduce herbicide-use intensity help selection pressure populations. However, deployment cropping systems must carefully planned by considering diverse rotation sequence multiple non-HR maximizing competition effectively manage Based experiences cultivation associated herbicide use western Canada, have been determinants weeds.

Herbicide Resistant Weeds and Crops
Modern herbicidal weed control often exploits physiological differences among plants and takes advantage of herbicide tolerance or resistance in crop plants to bring about the selective removal of susceptible weeds. The Weed Science Society of America defines herbicide tolerance as “the inherent ability of a plant to survive and reproduce after herbicide treatment” which suggests that herbicide...
متن کاملTaxonomic and Life History Bias in Herbicide Resistant Weeds: Implications for Deployment of Resistant Crops
Evolved herbicide resistance (EHR) is an important agronomic problem and consequently a food security problem, as it jeopardizes herbicide effectiveness and increases the difficulty and cost of weed management. EHR in weeds was first reported in 1970 and the number of cases has accelerated dramatically over the last two decades. Despite 40 years of research on EHR, why some weeds evolve resista...
متن کاملHerbicide-resistant weeds: from research and knowledge to future needs
Synthetic herbicides have been used globally to control weeds in major field crops. This has imposed a strong selection for any trait that enables plant populations to survive and reproduce in the presence of the herbicide. Herbicide resistance in weeds must be minimized because it is a major limiting factor to food security in global agriculture. This represents a huge challenge that will requ...
