Western boundary current in relation to Atlantic Subtropical Gyre dynamics during abrupt glacial climate fluctuations

چکیده

Ocean-atmosphere simulations corroborate the relationship between tropical Atlantic subsurface heat and salt storage driven by Salinity Maximum Water (SMW) deglacial perturbations of Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Whether AMOC variability last glacial cycle affected SMW export into West remained yet elusive. In order to assess sensitivity hydrography during abrupt rapid climatic oceanic perturbations, we present century-resolving foraminifera-based (~200 m water depth) temperature salinity reconstructions from Tobago Basin core M78/1–235-1. The proxy records were interpreted in terms closely related development North Brazil Current (NBC) Subtropical Gyre (STG) ~37 30 ka BP, relation their developments. Prior ~32.8 cyclic variations conditions attributed NBC, which acted line with a recurrent intensification relaxation trade winds, subtle migrations Intertropical Convergence Zone, moisture transport across Central America. Major re-organizations upper ocean-atmosphere system took place at BP ~ 21.8 unmirrored major changes. Thresholds for sufficient accumulation STG allow formation intensified dispersal not achieved before late HS1, when weakening, according backlog surface warming maximum Northern Hemisphere insolation together.

Reversed North Atlantic gyre dynamics in present and glacial climates

The dynamics of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre (SPG) are assessed under present and glacial boundary conditions by investigating the SPG sensitivity to surface wind-stress changes in a coupled climate model. To this end, the gyre transport is decomposed in Ekman, thermohaline, and bottom transports. Surface wind-stress variations are found to play an important indirect role in SPG dynamics th...

Abrupt glacial climate changes due to stochastic resonance.

Using an ocean-atmosphere climate model we demonstrate that stochastic resonance could be an important mechanism for millennial-scale climate variability during glacial times. We propose that the glacial ocean circulation, unlike today's, was an excitable system with a stable and a weakly unstable mode of operation, and that a combination of weak periodic forcing and plausible-amplitude stochas...

Mechanisms of Abrupt Climate Change of the Last Glacial Period

[1] More than a decade ago, ice core records from Greenland revealed that the last glacial period was characterized by abrupt climate changes that recurred on millennial time scales. Since their discovery, there has been a large effort to determine whether these climate events were a global phenomenon or were just confined to the North Atlantic region and also to reveal the mechanisms that were...

Dynamics of the SAR11 bacterioplankton lineage in relation to environmental conditions in the oligotrophic North Pacific subtropical gyre.

A quantitative PCR assay for the SAR11 clade of marine Alphaproteobacteria was applied to nucleic acids extracted from monthly depth profiles sampled over a 3-year period (2004-2007) at the open-ocean Station ALOHA (A Long-term Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment; 22 degrees 45'N, 158 degrees 00'W) in the oligotrophic North Pacific Ocean. This analysis revealed a high contribution (averaging 36% of...
