Weed seedbank diversity and sustainability indicators for simple and more diverse cropping systems

Storkey and Neve (2018) hypothesised that weed seedbank diversity could be used as an indicator of agroecosystem sustainability, with cropping systems associated higher being more agronomically environmentally sustainable than those lower diversity. We evaluated their hypothesis using multiple years empirical data collected from a long-term field experiment in Iowa, USA, life cycle assessment models parameterised experiment. found diversifying 2-year maize–soyabean rotation two additional crop phases, oat lucerne, to form 4-year (a) increased Simpson's index for species the soil seedbank, while (b) increasing maize soyabean productivity, (c) maintaining total energy production profitability, (d) reducing herbicide-related aquatic toxicity, fossil consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, damage human health due fine particulate matter, discharge sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus.
