Wealth Inequality: Opportunity or Unfairness?

This paper presents evidence of a new propagation mechanism for wealth inequality, based on differential responses, by education, to greater inequality at the start economic life. It is motivated novel positive cross-country relationship between and perceptions opportunity fairness, which holds only more educated. Using unique administrative micro data quasi-field experiment exogenous allocation households, finds that exposure top 10\% share life in country leads educated placed locations with above-median mobility attain higher levels position cohort-specific distribution later on. Underlying this effect participation risky financial real assets self-employment, no labor income, unemployment risk, or human capital investment channel. response robust controlling initial fixed other time-varying local features, including income consistent self-fulfilling responses perceived opportunities, without imitation learning from those top.
