Weak Lensing in the Blue: A Counter-intuitive Strategy for Stratospheric Observations

چکیده

Abstract The statistical power of weak lensing measurements is principally driven by the number high-redshift galaxies whose shapes are resolved. Conventional wisdom and physical intuition suggest this optimized deep imaging at long (red or near-IR) wavelengths, to avoid losing redshifted Balmer-break Lyman-break galaxies. We use synthetic Emission Line (“EL”)-COSMOS catalog simulate observations using different filters, from various altitudes. Here were predict exposures achieve a target z ≳ 0.3 source density, off-the-shelf custom filters. Ground-based easily better red as (more narrowly) space-based observations. However, we find that SuperBIT , diffraction-limited observatory operating in stratosphere, should instead perform its lensing-quality blue wavelengths.

A New Shear Estimator for Weak Lensing Observations

We present a new shear estimator for weak lensing observations which properly accounts for the effects of a realistic point spread function (PSF). Images of faint galaxies are subject to gravitational shearing followed by smearing with the instrumental and/or atmospheric PSF. We construct a ‘finite resolution shear operator’ which when applied to an observed image has the same effect as a gravi...

Wide field weak lensing observations of A 1689

We present a mass profile for A1689 from 0.13hMpc < r < 2hMpc from a weak lensing analysis of a 34′× 34′ R-band image from the ESO/MPG Wide Field Imager. We detect the gravitational shearing of a 23 < R < 25.5 background galaxy population even at the edge of the image with a 4σ significance, and find a two-dimensional mass reconstruction has a 13.4σ significance mass peak centered on the bright...

Weak lensing observations of the “ dark ” cluster MG 2016 + 112

We investigate the possible existence of a high-redshift (z = 1) cluster of galaxies associated with the QSO lens system MG2016+112. From an ultra-deep R-and less deep V-and I-band Keck images and a K-band mosaic from UKIRT, we detect ten galaxies with colors consistent with the lensing galaxy within 225h −1 kpc of the z = 1.01 lensing galaxy. This represents an overdensity of more than ten tim...

Weak Lensing Observations of High-redshift Clusters of Galaxies

We present results of a weak gravitational lensing survey of six X-ray selected high-redshift clusters of galaxies. We find that the masses of the clusters derived from weak lensing are comparable to those derived from the X-ray observations. We show that many of the clusters have significant substructure not observed in the X-ray observations and that for the more massive clusters a singular i...

Weak lensing observations of potentially X-ray underluminous galaxy clusters

Optically selected clusters of galaxies display a relation between their optical mass estimates and their X-ray luminosities LX that has a large scatter. A substantial fraction of optically selected clusters have LX estimates or upper limits significantly below the values expected from the LX-mass relation established for X-ray selected clusters, i.e., these clusters are X-ray underluminous for...
