We Usually Give Like This: Social Norms Describe Typical Charitable Causes Supported by Group Members

Millions of nonprofits compete for a share the billions dollars donated to charity each year. Yet how donors select which charities support remains relatively understudied. Social norms influence whether people give at all, but no research has yet considered also communicate information about causes group members typically support. To address this important question, we surveyed 1,735 from 117 countries understand they identified normative supported by their social groups. We found different giving profiles men, women, older people, younger conservatives, progressives, religious, and nonreligious with varying degrees consensus within group. Results demonstrate empirically—and first time—that identities contain content charitable Some were universally approved or avoided. can inform nonprofit fundraising strategy around segmentation targeting.
