Wavelike nature of the vertical shear instability in global protoplanetary discs

چکیده
ABSTRACT The vertical shear instability (VSI) is a robust phenomenon in irradiated protoplanetary discs (PPDs). majority of previous numerical simulations have focused on the turbulent properties its saturated state. However, saturation VSI manifests as large-scale coherent radially travelling inertial waves. In this paper, we study inertial-wave-disc interactions and their impact saturation. Inertial-wave linear theory developed applied to representative global 2D simulation using athena++ code. It found that saturates by separating disc into several radial wave zones roughly demarcated Lindblad resonances (turning points); structure also modest variation turbulence strength. Future work should employ large domains accommodate VSI, while concurrently adopting sufficiently fine resolutions resolve parametric attacks

Magnetorotational instability in protoplanetary discs
We investigate the linear growth and vertical structure of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in weakly ionised, stratified accretion discs. The magnetic field is initially vertical and dust grains are assumed to have settled towards the midplane, so charges are carried by electrons and ions only. Solutions are obtained at representative radial locations from the central protostar for diff...
متن کاملVortices and the saturation of the vertical shear instability in protoplanetary disks
If sufficiently irradiated by its central star, a protoplanetary disks falls into an equilibrium state exhibiting vertical shear. This state may be subject to a hydrodynamical instability, the ‘vertical shear instability’ (VSI), whose breakdown into turbulence transports a moderate amount of angular momentum while also facilitating planet formation, possibly via the production of small-scale vo...
متن کاملMagnetorotational instability in protoplanetary discs: The effect of dust grains
We investigate the linear growth and vertical structure of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in weakly ionised, stratified protoplanetary discs. The magnetic field is initially vertical and dust grains are assumed to be well mixed with the gas over the entire vertical dimension of the disc. For simplicity, all the grains are assumed to have the same radius (a = 0.1, 1 or 3 μm) and constit...
متن کاملDual-Wavelike Instability in Vortex Rings
A series of experimental observation are presented a dual-wavelike instability in vortex rings. The first one is presented at Reynolds number range between 600 and 1000 for circular vortex ring and the second one could be observed in radiant-symmetric vortex rings, azimuthal number n ≥ 2, at least covers the Reynolds number from 275 to 1000. The azimuthal number of the first instability depends...
متن کاملThe inner rim structures of protoplanetary discs
The inner boundary of protoplanetary discs is structured by the dramatic opacity changes at the transition from the dust-containing to a dust-free zone. This paper explores the variety and limits of inner rim structures in passively heated dusty discs. For this study, we implemented detailed sublimation physics in a fast Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. We show that the inner rim in dusty d...
