متن کاملNeck Pinching Dynamics Under Mean Curvature Flow
In this paper we study motion of surfaces of revolution under the mean curvature flow. For an open set of initial conditions close to cylindrical surfaces we show that the solution forms a “neck” which pinches in a finite time at a single point. We also obtain a detailed description of the neck pinching process.
متن کاملMean Flow Near Edges and Within Cavities Situated Inside Dense Canopies
A streamfunction-vorticity formulation is used to explore the extent to which turbulent and turbulently inviscid solutions to the mean momentum balance explain the mean flow across forest edges and within cavities situated inside dense forested canopies. The turbulent solution is based on the mean momentum balance where first-order closure principles are used to model turbulent stresses. The tu...
متن کاملSpiral Dynamics in Pattern-Forming Systems: Mean Flow Effects
Mean flow effects are discussed for two different pattern-forming systems: RayleighBénard convection and Faraday instability in viscous fluid. In both systems spirals are observed in certain parameter regions. In the Rayleigh-Bénard convection, the spiral core instability and subsequent generation of upand downflow hexagons are shown to occur due to the mean flow generated by the curved rolls n...
متن کاملMean flow in hexagonal convection: stability and nonlinear dynamics
Weakly nonlinear hexagon convection patterns coupled to mean flow are investigated within the framework of coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations. The equations are in particular relevant for non-Boussinesq Rayleigh-Bénard convection at low Prandtl numbers. The mean flow is found to (1) affect only one of the two longwave phase modes of the hexagons and (2) suppress the mixing between the two phase ...
