Wave Height Distributions and Rogue Waves in the Eastern Mediterranean

There is a lack of scientific knowledge about the physical sea characteristics eastern part Mediterranean Sea. The current work offers comprehensive view wave fields in southern Israel waters covering period between January 2017 and June 2018. analyzed data were collected by meteorological buoy providing wind parameters. As expected for this area, strongest storm events occurred throughout October–April. In paper, we analyze following two main objectives—identifying most appropriate statistical distribution model examining search rogue presence. objectives accomplished comparing number models suitable deep seawater waves. Tayfun–Fedele third-order showed best agreement with tail empirical height distribution. examination different thresholds identification waves resulted detection 109 unique waves, all relatively low height. detected examined, revealing that majority them presented crest-to-trough symmetry. This finding calls reevaluation crest amplitude being equal to or above 1.25, significant threshold which assumes carry their energy crest.
