Ciprofloxacin administration decreases enhanced ethanol elimination in ethanol-fed rats.
Many colonic aerobic bacteria possess alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity and are capable of oxidizing ethanol to acetaldehyde. Accordingly, some ingested ethanol can be metabolized in the colon in vivo via the bacteriocolonic pathway for ethanol oxidation. By diminishing the amount of aerobic colonic bacteria with ciprofloxacin treatment, we recently showed that the bacteriocolonic pathway ma...
متن کاملElectrocardiographic changes after ethanol and methanol administration in albino rats.
As an acute effect, both ethanol and methanol prolong P-R, Q-T and ST intervals in rat electrocardiogram. The R wave amplitude showed a marked increase with methanol. Other ECG abnormalities like S-T segment changes, appearance of Iso-electric S-T segment, inverted 'T' wave, ventricular ectopic and wandering pace maker were more common in methanol treated animals.
متن کاملMicrodialysis of ethanol during operant ethanol self-administration and ethanol determination by gas chromatography.
Operant self-administration methods are commonly used to study the behavioral and pharmacological effects of many drugs of abuse, including ethanol. However, ethanol is typically self-administered orally, rather than intravenously like many other drugs of abuse. The pharmacokinetics of orally administered drugs are more complex than intravenously administered drugs. Because understanding the re...
متن کاملIntravenous Administration of Ethanol
Six patients with a drain in the main pancreatic duct were studied. Ethanol was given orally with individually adjusted doses aiming at a blood value of 0-8/1000 (17-6 mmol/l). Concentrations of ethanol in venous blood and pancreatic juice were recorded for three hours. Similar studies were made when ethanol was administered as an intravenous priming dose followed by a maintenance infusion. Aft...
متن کاملCentral orexin (hypocretin) 2 receptor antagonism reduces ethanol self-administration, but not cue-conditioned ethanol-seeking, in ethanol-preferring rats.
Orexins are hypothalamic neuropeptides which bind to two G-protein-coupled receptors, orexin-1 (OX(1)R) and orexin-2 (OX(2)R) receptor. While a role for OX(1)R has been established in both ethanol reinforcement and ethanol-seeking behaviour, the role of OX(2)R in these behaviours is relatively less-studied. The aim of this study was to determine the role of central OX(2)R in ethanol-taking and ...
