Water Hammer in Steel–Plastic Pipes Connected in Series

This paper experimentally and numerically investigates the water hammer phenomenon in serially connected steel HDPE pipes with different diameters. The aim of laboratory tests was to obtain time history pressure head at downstream end pipeline system. Transient were conducted on seven system configurations. experimental results show that despite significantly smaller diameter pipe compared pipe, introducing an section makes it possible suppress valve-induced surge. By referring conducted, comparative numerical calculations performed using fixed-grid method characteristics. To reproduce wave attenuation a Brunone-Vitkovský instant acceleration-based model unsteady friction used. include viscoelastic behavior wall, one-element Kelvin–Voigt applied. calibrating coefficient creep parameters, satisfactory agreement between calculated observed data obtained. calibrated values parameters for single test introduced simulate remaining runs. It demonstrated same slightly configurations lengths can be effective. However, this approach fails reliably oscillations systems sections lengths.
