Water availability and water usage solutions for electrolysis in hydrogen production

Europe is committed to a new growth strategy with no net greenhouse gases emissions by 2050, where hydrogen has clear role play. Portugal's for H2 sets public policies promoting an industry focused on the value chain. Considering production of green from renewable sources key, water electrolysis becomes priority, and it, need assess suitability sources, which determined both quantitative qualitative factors. This work presents approach via applying Sustainable Value Methodology decision-making support, combining economic, environmental social criteria. The applied two different sites in Portugal: semi-urban location Atlantic coast (site A) rural area far B). For sites, are evaluated regarding availability, quality, transport options, abstraction costs, treatment needs regulation (including constraints) acceptance. resulting sustainable indicator, aggregator levels information, enables relative comparison performance involved costs. It found that grid most suited source due lower risk supply, costs avoids complex permitting processes. Likewise, seawater wastewater plant effluent (only site showed be possible factors affecting waste disposal treatment.
