Vowel quality in four Alemannic dialects and its influence on the respective varieties of Swiss Standard German

Despite being one of the official languages in Switzerland, phonetic properties Swiss Standard German (SSG) have been studied insufficiently. Regarding Alemannic (ALM) dialects, most available studies dealt with consonants rather than vowels. To counteract this general lack research, study investigates long-vowel inventories four ALM dialects as well their respective SSG varieties regarding vowel quality. The aim is twofold: on hand, it provides first comparative acoustic analysis and vowels; other to which extent interference from determines qualities varieties. end, male female speakers Bern, Chur, Brig, Zurich were recorded producing each three times, resulted a corpus 1632 tokens. results show that quality basically transferred two dialect regions: Chur Brig. Instead, spoken Bern certain did not match ones, mostly for <a> was fronted variety either dialect. Additionally, <ä> produced both [┋ː] [ӕː], while <o> realised more back.
