Vortex imprints on a free surface as proxy for surface divergence

چکیده
In turbulence near a free surface, strong vortices attach to the creating surface imprints visible as nearly circular ‘dimples’. By studying these in direct numerical simulation (DNS) data we make two observations. First, of surface-attached can be very effectively distinguished from other turbulent features using physical features: they are shape, and persist for long time compared with pertinent scales. Secondly, instantaneous number dimples an area, $N(t)$ , is intimately related its mean-square divergence, $\beta ^2(t)$ . We develop simple physically transparent computer vision procedure which, properties low eccentricity longevity, detects tracks their only, sensitivity accuracy $90\,\%$ or better. compare finding normalised cross-correlation $0.90$ changes $N$ lagging around $0.8T_\infty$ behind those ^2$ ( $T_\infty$ integral scale), confirming common observation that spawned by upwelling events where large. These findings suggest rate mass flux across being closely estimated remotely some natural flows free-surface proxy.

A SAR Observation and Numerical Study on Ocean Surface Imprints of Atmospheric Vortex Streets
The sea surface imprints of Atmospheric Vortex Street (AVS) off Aleutian Volcanic Islands, Alaska were observed in two RADARSAT-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images separated by about 11 hours. In both images, three pairs of distinctive vortices shedding in the lee side of two volcanic mountains can be clearly seen. The length and width of the vortex street are about 60-70 km and 20 km, resp...

Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories, Californ ia Institute ol Technology, Pasadena. CA 91125 The interaction of turbulent vortex rings that approach a clean water surface under various angles is experimentally investigated. The temporal evolution of the vortex rings with an initial Reynolds number of Re0 = 7500 is characterized by the Laminar/ turbulent transition and asymptotic relaminarization...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Investigation of Free-Surface Turbulent Vortex Flows with Strong Circulation in a Vortex Chamber
The results obtained from analytical, numerical and experimental modelling of free-surface vortex flows are presented. Vortex flow in an open channel flow chamber is simulated using the ANSYS CFX steady Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase flow model with various turbulence closure methods. The water surface and tangential velocity profile are also modelled using the Vatistas ( 2) vortex model. These p...
متن کاملMechanism Analysis of Free-Surface Vortex Formation during Steel Teeming
To develop an effective technology to prevent vortex forming in ladles, the mechanism underlying vortex formation during steel teeming must be studied. For simulations using the numerical simulation software Fluent, a geometric model of the ladle was generated, and initially water teeming in the ladle was simulated for different initial tangential velocities. The results obtained help to verify...
متن کاملSurface vortex solitons.
We predict the existence of vortex solitons supported by the surface between two optical lattices imprinted in Kerr-type nonlinear media. We find that such surface vortex solitons can exhibit strongly noncanonical profiles, and that their salient properties are dictated by the location of the vortex core relative to the surface. A refractive index modulation forming the optical lattices at both...
