Void Engineering in Silica Glass for Ultralow Optical Scattering Loss

چکیده
Optical losses in silica glass fibers remain a challenge their applications. The main contributor to optical attenuation is Rayleigh scattering. This review discusses the recent studies and findings on voids effects loss. Through experimental of pressure-quenching at melting temperature, void size shrunk, loss was reduced approximately half that conventional 0.2 GPa. Our modeling results predicted further reduction expected, credited optimization network, called topological pruning, under high compressive pressures up 4

Void deformation and breakup in shearing silica glass.
We study shear deformation and breakup of voids in silica glass using molecular dynamics simulations. With an increase in the shear strain, two kinds of defects--threefold-coordinated silicon and nonbridging oxygen atoms--appear as spherical voids deform elastically into ellipsoidal shapes. For shear strains epsilon>15%, nanocracks appear on void surfaces and voids deform plastically into a thr...
متن کاملVoid-nanograting transition by ultrashort laser pulse irradiation in silica glass.
The structural evolution from void modification to self-assembled nanogratings in fused silica is observed for moderate (NA > 0.4) focusing conditions. Void formation, appears before the geometrical focus after the initial few pulses and after subsequent irradiation, nanogratings gradually occur at the top of the induced structures. Nonlinear Schrödinger equation based simulations are conducted...
متن کاملSpontaneous Nonlinear Scattering Processes in Silica Optical Fibers
When light travels in a optical fiber, a fraction of its total power is always scattered to other wavelengths (or polarization) due to material non linearity. Whether that scattering is weak or strong, desirable or not, depends on the situation. One distinguishes (i) scattering stimulated by the presence of a seed wave (at another wavelength or polarization), (ii) spontaneous scattering, and (i...
متن کاملThrough a Glass Brightly: Low-Loss Fibers for Optical Communications
Technological breakthroughs develop through years of scientific collaboration and innovation, each discovery built upon the failures and successes of earlier work. Such was the case with the work on the first low-loss optical fiber. What began with three Corning scientists searching for a communications solution ultimately created what is now known to be a key to the Information Age. In 1948, C...
متن کاملUltralow-power all-optical switching
Using analytical modeling and detailed numerical simulations, we investigate properties of hybrid systems of photonic crystal microcavities which incorporate a highly nonlinear ultraSlow light medium. We demonstrate that such systems, while being miniature in size sorder wavelengthd, and integrable, could enable ultrafast nonlinear all-optical switching at ultralow seven single photond energy l...
