Visitors not Welcome: Hospital Visitation Restrictions and Institutional Betrayal

Healthcare organizations’ continued restrictions on hospital visitation during the COVID-19 pandemic can be considered a violation of rights hospitalized patients to receive family visitors. Despite expert opinion related safety and low risk visitor transmission with appropriate monitoring precautions, have beyond initial crisis phase pandemic, little transparency or inclusion key stakeholders in decision-making process. Particularly critical care units, blocking access visitors contribute additional harm trauma for care-dependent their families. Utilizing an institutional betrayal framework, aim this commentary ICU policy is provide discussion how hospitals who serve population placed critically ill patients, families, healthcare workers at complex trauma. Hospital social should incorporate integrated work approach advocacy efforts which address not only individual patient service needs, but also uneven power differential that inequity visitation, medical mistrust, long-term community On interprofessional team, function as informed systems experts, coordinating facilitating supports help families cope hospitalization, while advocating within institution elected officials change protect family–centered rights.
