Viscous banding instabilities: non-porous viscous fingering

چکیده
We demonstrate a novel instability found within unconfined viscous bands/rims, or free-surface flows involving longitudinal viscosity contrast. Such instabilities may be described as banding instabilities, non-porous fingering of the intrusion less fluid into band more fluid. A consequence this work is that widely known to occur in porous media following seminal Saffman & Taylor ( Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, vol. 245, 1958, pp. 312–329), also environments. Although mechanism characteristically different from Saffman–Taylor instability, there are important similarities between two. The main similarity contrast leads instability. distinguishing feature confinement, such rigid walls Hele-Shaw cell, not necessary for occur. Viscous and elastic fingering instabilities in foam.
We investigate pattern formation in the immiscible displacement of foam from a confining geometry. The dominant length scales with the driving pressure gradient as for a Newtonian fluid, but depends surprisingly on the ratio of plate separation to bubble diameter. The pattern morphology exhibits a transition from a jagged, presumably elastic, character to a smooth, viscous character as the shea...
متن کاملFluctuations in viscous fingering.
Our experiments on viscous (Saffman-Taylor) fingering in Hele-Shaw channels reveal finger width fluctuations that were not observed in previous experiments, which had lower aspect ratios and higher capillary numbers Ca. These fluctuations intermittently narrow the finger from its expected width. The magnitude of these fluctuations is described by a power law, Ca(-0.64), which holds for all aspe...

Measurements in turbulent flows have revealed that the velocity field in nonequilibrium systems exhibits q-exponential or power law distributions in agreement with theoretical arguments based on nonextensive statistical mechanics. Here we consider Hele-Shaw flow as simulated by the Lattice Boltzmann method and find similar behavior from the analysis of velocity field measurements. For the trans...

متن کاملFluid mixing from viscous fingering.
Mixing efficiency at low Reynolds numbers can be enhanced by exploiting hydrodynamic instabilities that induce heterogeneity and disorder in the flow. The unstable displacement of fluids with different viscosities, or viscous fingering, provides a powerful mechanism to increase fluid-fluid interfacial area and enhance mixing. Here we describe the dissipative structure of miscible viscous finger...
