Viscosity of two-dimensional suspensions.
Over a range of conditions, lipid and surfactant monolayers exhibit coexistence of discrete solid domains in a continuous liquid. The surface shear viscosity, mu(s), of such monolayers collapses onto a single curve: mu(s)/mu(so) = [1-(A/A(c))](-1), in which mu(so) is the viscosity of the liquid phase, A is the area fraction of the solid phase measured by fluorescence microscopy, and A(c) is a c...
متن کاملViscosity of Suspensions: A Theoretical Study
In this work, Einstein’s formula for the viscosity of suspensions is revised to include effect of particle interactions. The revision is based on assumption of linear behavior of particle interactions with distance between particles. The resulting formula is tested over a range of particle size and concentrations. Good agreement is attained between theory and previously published measurements.

The discusser wishes to congratulate the authors for their excellent paper. He would like to discuss some possible drag reduction effects. The discusser has reanalyzed the authors' data assuming quasi-uniform flows at the end of the channel. For the clearwater flow experiments (runs C-1 and C-2), the data suggest an equivalent roughness height k, of the flume (smooth plexiglass) between 0.15 mm...
متن کاملInfluence of Particle Shape on the Viscosity of Kaolin Suspensions
The influence of particle shape (aspect ratio) on the intrinsic viscosity is investigated, taking three Czech kaolin products (floated kaolins) as paradigmatic examples. An average aspect ratio is obtained for each kaolin from a comparison of particle size measurements using sedimentation and laser diffraction. The intrinsic viscosity is obtained by a multistep procedure: firstly, flow curves a...
متن کاملComputation of shear viscosity of colloidal suspensions by SRD-MD.
The behaviour of sheared colloidal suspensions with full hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) is numerically studied. To this end, we use the hybrid stochastic rotation dynamics-molecular dynamics (SRD-MD) method. The shear viscosity of colloidal suspensions is computed for different volume fractions, both for dilute and concentrated cases. We verify that HIs help in the collisions and the streaming...
