Viruses of Poliomyelitis
Qualitative immunological differences exist between early passage strains or so called human strains of the virus of poliomyelitis. These differences show a relationship to the epidemic source of the virus and are exemplified in this study by 4 strains isolated in different years during an eastern and western epidemic of poliomyelitis.

is based on the fact that all contributors utilized epoxyor polyesterembedded specimens which, although the best embedding media available at present, may not represent the ideal and ultimate method of preparation. In addition, new fixatives and stains have been introduced recently and improvements in sectioning and microscopy can be expected. While many structures have been well described in t...

Tissue culture inoculation has replaced the production of the experimental disease in the monkey as the method of choice for the direct isolation and antigenic identification of virus from materials obtained from poliomyelitis patients.""' 12,16,18 In addition, tissue-culture methods have now made practical serologic tests for antibody development in man after natural poliomyelitis infection' '...
متن کاملInterference between Poliomyelitis Viruses in Tissue Culture
The inhibition of multiplication of one poliomyelitis virus by a poliomyelitis virus of another immunologic type has been established by using tissue cultures of monkey testes. The degree of interference varied from none, to partial, to complete, depending upon the time between inoculation of the interfering and the challenge viruses, and the amount of each virus inoculated. Reciprocal interfer...
متن کاملAn Epidemic of Paralytic Poliomyelitis Characterized by Dual Infections with Poliomyelitis and Coxsackie Viruses
The first known epidemic of poliomyelitis in Easton, Pennsylvania, occurred in 1949, and was unusual in the high proportion of paralytic to non-paralytic cases. Both poliomyelitis and Cosxackie, or C, viruses were isolated from more than half the patients studied during the acute stage of the disease. One month later C virus was only occasionally recovered. Classification of the 28 strains of C...
