Temperature-modulated immunogenicity to Yersinia pestis from Yersinia enterocolitica O3.

The ability of Yersinia enterocolitica O3, grown at 25 degrees C, to promote cross-immunity to Y. pestis was lost after repeated subcultures at 37 degrees C, which selected for bacterial populations having lower in vivo survival. Subculturing Y. enterocolitica O3 from 37 to 25 degrees C restored the cross-immunogenicity although the in vivo survival remained low.

Relationship of virulence-associated autoagglutination to hemagglutinin production in Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia enterocolitica-like bacteria.

A total of 339 Yersinia strains were tested for virulence-associated autoagglutination and hemagglutinin (HA) production. Autoagglutination was frequent among human clinical isolates belonging to Y. enterocolitica serogroups O:3, O:8, and O:9 and among porcine isolates of serogroups O:3 and O:9. Positive autoagglutination results were also observed in serogroups O:1 and O:2, associated with out...

Generalized transduction of small Yersinia enterocolitica plasmids.

To study phage-mediated gene transfer in Yersinia, the ability of Yersinia phages to transduce naturally occurring plasmids was investigated. The transduction experiments were performed with a temperate phage isolated from a pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica strain and phage mixtures isolated from sewage. Small plasmids (4.3 and 5.8 kb) were transduced at a frequency of 10(-5) to 10(-7)/PFU. H...

Yersinia enterocolitica: pathogenesis, virulence and antimicrobial resistance.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a heterogeneous group of strains, which are classified into 6 biogroups, and into more than 57 O serogroups. However, the human pathogenic strains most frequently isolated worldwide belong to serogroups O:3, O:5,27, O:8 and O:9. The major route of Y. enterocolitica infection is through contaminated foods or water. The primary pathogenic event is colonization of the in...
