Violent Memory: Haruki Murakami’s Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

Modern information technologies have radically transfigured human experience. The extensive use of mnemonic devices, for instance, has redefined the subject by externalizing aspects inner consciousness. These transformations involve incorporeal but deeply felt, violent dislocations experience, traumas that are grounded in reality which challenge symbolic resources because they difficult to articulate. I am interested how unseen wounding intervention is registered “impossible” language speculative fiction (SF). SF both rooted “real” and “estranged” from reality, thus able give form impossible injuries. This paper argues Haruki Murakami uses mode his novel, Hard-Boiled Wonderland End World, explore substitutes interfere with complex process remembering World War II Japan. will demonstrate how, through SF, an crisis memory postwar Japan, a marked unspeakable shock war trauma results intrusion artificial memories upon one’s consciousness history.
