Vinen’s Energy Barrier

چکیده
Abstract In 1963, the late W. F. (“Joe”) Vinen concluded, partly on intuitive grounds, that ab initio creation of a quantized vortex line in superfluid $$^4$$ 4 He is impeded by an energy barrier. We place this prescient insight into context and review subsequent theoretical experimental research calculated height barrier validated result through measurements negative ions moving above Landau critical velocity. discuss implications these results for other superfluids, including laser-cooled dilute atomic gases, development hydrodynamics.

Energy barrier in the two-Higgs model
The electroweak model is extended by a second Higgs doublet and a numerical investigation of static, finite energy classical solutions is performed. The results indicate that for a large domain of the parameters of the Higgs potential, the energy barrier between topologically distinct vacua of the Lagrangian is constituted by a bisphaleron.
متن کاملEnergy flow /barrier analysis, a novel view
In this paper, the principal concepts of the energy flow/barrier analysis are used to define an accident as a series of events including failure of the control and protective barriers, which results exposure of a target to a hazardous agent. “Barrier structure” is introduced, as a combination of serial and parallel barriers, to calculate the severity of risks of accidents. It is defined for eac...
متن کاملNP-Completeness of the Direct Energy Barrier Problem without Pseudoknots
Knowledge of energy barriers between pairs of secondary structures for a given DNA or RNA molecule is useful, both in understanding RNA function in biological settings and in design of programmed molecular systems. Current heuristics are not guaranteed to find the exact energy barrier, raising the question whether the energy barrier can be calculated efficiently. In this paper, we study the com...
متن کاملTwo-state folding over a weak free-energy barrier.
We present a Monte Carlo study of a model protein with 54 amino acids that folds directly to its native three-helix-bundle state without forming any well-defined intermediate state. The free-energy barrier separating the native and unfolded states of this protein is found to be weak, even at the folding temperature. Nevertheless, we find that melting curves to a good approximation can be descri...
متن کاملLow Energy Nuclear Reactions and Sub-Barrier Neutron Transfers
The problem of anomalous heat production by hydrogenated metals is analysed in the light of deep sub-barrier nucleon transfer reactions. Consideration of the phenomena of condensed matter low energy nuclear reactions and in-vacuum few-body nuclear transfer reactions suggests that LENRs could be due to interactions among the isotopes of hydrogen and certain metals. It is postulated that hydrogen...
