چکیده
The decades-long Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Project includes both cloud radiation measurements from instruments on the Aqua, Terra, Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellites. To build a reliable long-term climate data record, it is important to determine accuracies of parameters retrieved sensors each satellite. Cloud amount, phase, top height derived radiances taken by Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) SNPP are evaluated relative same quantities determined Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) Aerosol Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) spacecraft. VIIRS fractions found be as good or better than those for CERES amounts Aqua MODerate-resolution Spectroradiometer (MODIS) estimated two other operational algorithms. Sensitivities fraction bias CALIOP resolution, matching time window, viewing zenith angle examined. phase biases slightly greater their MODIS counterparts. A majority errors due multilayer clouds during daytime supercooled liquid water at night. cloud-top similar MODIS, except ice clouds, which smaller MODIS. uncertainties overall very several algorithms, but fail match experimental machine learning techniques. greatest occur multilayered misclassification. heights can improved relaxing tropopause constraints, improving lapse-rate model temperature profiles, accounting clouds. Other suggestions retrievals also discussed.

JP1.10 On the Satellite Determination of Multilayered Multiphase Cloud Properties
Conventional single-layer cloud assumptions lead to erroneous results in satellite retrieved cloud properties for multilayered multiphase cloud systems. The Cloud and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) project strives to develop an exploratory multilayer cloud data product using the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The new MODIS multilayer cloud products will be av...
متن کاملCALIPSO observations of near-cloud aerosol properties as a function of cloud fraction
This paper uses spaceborne lidar data to study how near-cloud aerosol statistics of attenuated backscatter depend on cloud fraction. The results for a large region around the Azores show that (1) far-from-cloud aerosol statistics are dominated by samples from scenes with lower cloud fractions, while near-cloud aerosol statistics are dominated by samples from scenes with higher cloud fractions; ...
متن کاملCALIPSO/CALIOP Cloud Phase Discrimination Algorithm
The current cloud thermodynamic phase discrimination by Cloud-Aerosol Lidar Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) is based on the depolarization of backscattered light measured by its lidar [CloudAerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP)]. It assumes that backscattered light from ice crystals is depolarizing, whereas water clouds, being spherical, result in minimal depolarizatio...
متن کاملInitial Stability Assessment of S-NPP VIIRS Reflective Solar Band Calibration Using Invariant Desert and Deep Convective Cloud Targets
The latest CERES FM-5 instrument launched onboard the S-NPP spacecraft will use the VIIRS visible radiances from the NASA Land Product Evaluation and Analysis Tool Elements (PEATE) product for retrieving the cloud properties associated with its TOA flux measurement. In order for CERES to provide climate quality TOA flux datasets, the retrieved cloud properties must be consistent throughout the ...
