Vertebrate Segmentation: Lunatic Transcriptional Regulation
Vertebrate segmentation relies on a molecular oscillator, the segmentation clock, which controls the periodic expression of genes such as lunatic fringe in the presomitic mesoderm. Oscillations of lunatic fringe transcripts have now been shown to be controlled at the transcriptional level by clock elements in the lunatic fringe promoter.

Somites are the embryonic precursors of vertebrae, ribs, and skeletal muscles. They form from the presomitic mesoderm (PSM) by a periodic segmentation process called somitogenesis. The periodic budding of somites is controlled in part by the oscillatory expression of genes such as Lunatic fringe (Lfng), a modulator of Notch signaling, which function in a segmentation clock that times somitogene...
متن کاملMechanisms of vertebrate segmentation.
That all higher organisms possess some segmental organization during their development is presumably no coincidence. Segmentation appears to be an important developmental strategy with which to build and diversify different body regions. It can be studied at many levels, ranging from molecule and genome, through cells and their interactions, to morphogenesis and whole body pattern; and there is...
متن کاملTranscriptional evolution underlying vertebrate sexual development.
Explaining the diversity of vertebrate sex-determining mechanisms ranging from genotypic (GSD) to temperature-dependent (TSD) remains a developmental and evolutionary conundrum. Using a phylogenetic framework, we explore the transcriptional evolution during gonadogenesis of several genes involved in sexual development, combining novel data from Chrysemys picta turtles (TSD) and published data f...
متن کاملTranscriptional regulation of the stem cell leukemia gene (SCL)--comparative analysis of five vertebrate SCL loci.
The stem cell leukemia (SCL) gene encodes a bHLH transcription factor with a pivotal role in hematopoiesis and vasculogenesis and a pattern of expression that is highly conserved between mammals and zebrafish. Here we report the isolation and characterization of the zebrafish SCL locus together with the identification of three neighboring genes, IER5, MAP17, and MUPP1. This region spans 68 kb a...
