Vector Competency of Aphis gossypii and Bemisia tabaci to Transmit Cotton Leafroll Dwarf Virus

A new variant of cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLRDV) (genus: Polerovirus, family: Solemoviridae) was discovered in (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fields that were reported to be infested with aphids and whiteflies southern Alabama 2017. Prior the confirmation CLRDV, speculation focused on as a potential vector then-unknown virus. Although only transmit CLRDV is aphid, Aphis gossypii (Glover), two recombinant poleroviruses have been recently transmitted by whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.). Due emergence U.S., recent studies poleroviruses, conflicting messages and/or could transmitting relayed growers stakeholders Cotton Belt. The objective this study determine if A. or B. (B Mitotype) cotton. results demonstrated CLRDV-AL transmissible alate apterous morphs gossypii, but not tabaci. These findings emphasize importance screening insect vectors for transmission novel plant variants correctly identify vector(s) provide appropriate information make informed management decisions.
