Variations in pollinator-mediated selection of floral traits across flowering times

چکیده
Abstract Spatiotemporal variations in plant-pollinator interactions drive floral evolution and shape the diversity of flowers angiosperms. However, potential role driving differentiation across flowering times within a population has not been documented. In this study, we aimed to quantify pollinator-mediated selection traits different Primula sikkimensis (an entomophilous plant) two natural populations. The results demonstrated that plants were shorter produced fewer with larger sizes early time than late time. time, pollinator types visitation frequency was lower resulting female fitness. Pollinator-mediated varied more received during These highlight temporal variation may have diversification population.

Implications of a long-term, pollinator-mediated selection on floral traits in a generalist herb.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The phenotypic selection of a diverse insect assemblage was studied on a generalist plant species (Paeonia broteroi) in ten flowering seasons, with tests for whether visitor preferences for plants with larger flowers eventually translated into significant differences among plants in visitation rates, seed production, seed mass, seed germination and seedling survival. METHO...
متن کاملPhenotypic selection on flowering phenology and pollination efficiency traits between Primula populations with different pollinator assemblages
Floral traits have largely been attributed to phenotypic selection in plant-pollinator interactions. However, the strength of this link has rarely been ascertained with real pollinators. We conducted pollinator observations and estimated selection through female fitness on flowering phenology and floral traits between two Primula secundiflora populations. We quantified pollinator-mediated selec...
متن کاملFloral symmetry: pollinator-mediated stabilizing selection on flower size in bilateral species.
Pollinator-mediated stabilizing selection (PMSS) has been proposed as the driver of the evolutionary shift from radial to bilateral symmetry of flowers. Studies have shown that variation in flower size is lower in bilateral than in radial species, but whether bilateral flowers experience more stabilizing selection pressures by employing fewer, more specialized pollinators than radial flowers re...
متن کاملMatching floral and pollinator traits through guild convergence and pollinator ecotype formation.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Pollinator landscapes, as determined by pollinator morphology/behaviour, can vary inter- or intraspecifically, imposing divergent selective pressures and leading to geographically divergent floral ecotypes. Assemblages of plants pollinated by the same pollinator (pollinator guilds) should exhibit convergence of floral traits because they are exposed to similar selective pres...
متن کاملEnvironment and pollinator-mediated selection on parapatric floral races of Mimulus aurantiacus.
We tested whether selection by pollinators could explain the parapatric distribution of coastal red- and inland yellow-flowered races of Mimulus aurantiacus (Phrymaceae) by examining visitation to natural and experimental populations. As a first step in evaluating whether indirect selection might explain floral divergence, we also tested for local adaptation in early life stages using a recipro...
