Validating Sea-Level Altimetry Data against Tide Gauge for Coastal Risk Analysis in Mozambique

Satellite altimetry data provide a solution to the lack of in situ tide gauge data, which are essential for comprehending various marine processes worldwide. In present study, we seek validate ALES-retrieved sea-level against observations from four ground stations on coast Mozambique. The approach consisted extracting selected tracks Jason-1, Jason-2 and Jason-3 missions, processing it (i) remove outliers, (ii) collocate alongside (iii) tidal component detrend, (iv) perform set statistical analyses. Good agreement was found between three (Maputo, r = 0.59; Inhambane, 0.87; Pemba, 0.75), with exception Beira. annual semi-annual cycles two datasets revealed that signal is smaller amplitude ahead (with few exceptions) by varying number days each location. Both far more comparable where particular has same order magnitude, followed Maputo station. study concluded Pemba valid can be used coastal risk analysis other applications. No could validated Inhambane Beira due consistent sufficiently long records. This difficulty urges need improved maintenance practices located near human settlements rely sound information sea level its variability protect lives, infrastructure livelihoods.
